Joint Committee on human rights holds expert witness session on enquiry into violence against women and girls.

The Parliamentary joint Committee into human rights is holding expert witness session into violence against women and girls on May 7th at 9.45 am, committee room 3A at the palace of Westminister.
Expert witnesses in attendance will be Rebecca Hilsenrath, Chief  Legal Officer, Equality and Human Rights Commision, Anna Henry, Director of Human Rights and respect programme, Equality and Human Rights Commision and Dr.Joanna Godley, Head of Freedom and Justice Dept. European Union agency for fundamental rights.

The Latest report compiled by The Committee of Public Accounts criticises the BBC’s Digital Media Initiative (DMI) after the £100 million investment funded by Licence payers has provided virtually nothing in return.

The Latest report compiled by The Committee of Public Accounts criticises the BBC’s Digital Media Initiative (DMI) after the £100 million investment funded by Licence payers has provided virtually nothing in return.
Margaret Hodge, chair of the Committee of Public Accounts, was speaking as the Committee published its 52nd Report (see below for link to full report) which, on the basis of evidence from the BBC and the BBC Trust, examined the BBC’s Digital Media Initiative.

New professional standard for expert witnesses in Forensic Anthropology

The Royal Anthropological Institute together with the British Association for Forensic Anthropology and the Forensic Science Regulator have established a new professional standard for expert witnesses in Forensic Anthropology.
Gaille Mackinnon Chair of the British Association for Forensic Anthropology said “investigative authorities and the criminal justice system can now be assured they are engaging with forensic anthropologists who have been independently certified to an appropriate level of expertise via a rigorous quality assurance process.”

The Home Affairs Committee announces inquiry into gangs and youth crime - written evidence sought by the Committee during the gathering of evidence proccess which will include expert witness contribution.

The Home Affairs Committee is today announcing an inquiry into Gangs and youth crime.

 

The inquiry will consider:

 

Whether the 2011 Ending Gang and Youth Violence programme has been effective and whether it has been implemented adequately?

The effectiveness of current law enforcement and legislation, including gang injunctions, knife and gun crime legislation?

How reliable is statistical data concerning gang-related offences and “hotspots”?

Panorama investigator Fiona Walker exposes the true costs of fraud to patients and the NHS in a report published today (25-03-2014) by BDO International Accountancy and The University of Portsmouth. 

Last night’s Panorama investigation into NHS fraud looked at the current Government’s estimated fraud figures of two hundred and twenty nine million pounds per annum lost by the NHS due to acts of Fraud within the service.  Jim Gee, interviewed for Panorama (director of NHS for counter fraud services for 8 years, currently director of BDO International Accounts/Forensic Accountancy Services) disputed the governments figure after a thorough investigation and report - produced in association with The University of Portsmouth into all areas of NHS fraud.

Exngineering expert witnesses due to give evidence into 4 x 4 police deaths tragedy at Belfast Coroners Court .

Belfast Coroners Court held a preliminary hearing into the deaths of four police constables who were killed after their 4 x 4 shogun patrol vehicle crashed into a wall in Co. Down in 2008.The men died after being trapped inside their burning vehicle.
Four expert witnesses are due to give evidence at the enquiry on behalf of the police, the relatives and the forensic services.
Ronan Daly a lawyer for one of the bereaved families said it would be best if all the expert witnesses got together before the hearing to assess which points they agreed and disagreed on.

House of Commons Education Committee to hold one off expert witness evidence session on child well being.   

The House of Commons Education Committee is holding a one off expert witness evidence session on child well being.  The purpose of the expert session is to explore issues relating to children in England with regard to the UNICEF Report Card 11 on child well being in rich countries.
Expert witnesses in attendance will be Dragon Nastic, Domestic Policy and Research Officer, Unicef UK, Peter Crigg, Director of Campaigns, Policy and Research, The Children’s society and the Rt.Hon David Laws MP, Minister of State for Schools, Department of Education.

Umbar Ali from Bradford was freed after expert witness evidence found that injuries to his partner were self inflicted and the scratches on her face were made from fingernails rather than a knife.
Stephen Wood Mr. Ali’s barrister said expert evidence had found that injuries to his partner were inconsistent with knife wounds due to their depth and the fact they were linear in nature.

Leading Child abuse expert calls for medical students to be trained in expert witness skills. 

Leading Child abuse expert calls for medical students to be trained in expert witness skills.
Dr. Amaka Offiah who is chairperson of The Great Ormond Street Child Abuse and Protection Group and a serving expert witness to the courts in child abuse cases has spoken of the need for medical students to be trained to develop and research the skills and objectivity needed to provide an expert witness report.

EU launches legal proceedings against UK Government concerning  air quality  standards in British cities.

Five Judges at the Supreme Court recently heard expert witness evidence regarding the air quality in British urban areas.  After digesting the expert opinion the Supreme Court
admitted that the UK was in breach of its obligations concerning  the EU’s directive on air quality.

High Court judge agrees to new inquest into death of Norwich shop worker, after new expert evidence has come to light 

After new expert evidence has come to light Lord Justice Pitchford agreed to a new inquest into the death of Joanne Foreman a Norwich shop worker who was found dead at her home in St. Helena Way, Horsford, on March 12 2011.

President of the Law Society of Scotland warns of negative Impact on Scottish Legal system of removal of Corroboration 

Bruce Beveridge, president of the Law Society of Scotland warned that the removal of Corroboration (a unique feature of Scottish law - meaning at least two sources of eyewitness or expert witness evidence are required to support each material fact before a defendant can be convicted) will have dire consequences for other areas of the justice system, for example in dock identification, reliance of  an accused by a single witness “runs the risk of mistaken identification leading to a miscarriage of justice”.

Arrival of bit coin ATM’s in London attracts attention of HMRC  and forensic accountancy experts.

The first bit coin ATM’s in the UK, dispensing the internet crypto currency, will be available in Central London this month.  This has attracted the attention of HMRC and expert witnesses who specialise in forensic accountancy, money laundering and financial investigations as private money entrepreneurs are capitalising on the growing interest in bit coins and are buying up ATM’s.

Professional Mckenzie friends are becoming increasingly commonplace in the legal system - which its felt is likely to increase due to the recent cuts in legal aid.  Whilst Mckenzie friends is not new and “professional” Mckenzie friends have been in use for some 7 years - their increased use is mainly taking place in family courts where the scheduled legal aid cuts are likely to be felt most.
