The Future of breast cancer prevention

Drugs could be used to prevent breast cancer in women at high risk of the disease in the same way that statins are used for heart disease if trials looking at ways of predicting risk are successful, according to an international panel of cancer experts.

In a review published in the journal Lancet Oncology today (Monday)* the panel - including Cancer Research UK’s Professor Jack Cuzick - agreed that all women with a greater than four per cent above average risk of getting breast cancer in the next ten years should be offered preventive measures and closer monitoring.

Combination treatment halves deaths from locally advanced prostate cancer

A treatment approach that combines radiotherapy with six months of prior hormone therapy could halve the risk of death from locally advanced prostate cancer - disease that has spread to the nearby tissue or organs.

Researchers at the University of Newcastle in Australia and Calvary Mater Newcastle carried out a clinical trial involving 802 men with locally advanced prostate cancer.

Participants were assigned to one of three treatment groups - radiotherapy alone; radiotherapy with three months of hormone therapy; or radiotherapy with six months of hormone therapy.

Cancer Research UK scientists in Oxford are trialling an experimental drug to treat lung cancer patients who have stopped responding to initial chemotherapy treatment. The trial will take place at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust.

The international early Phase II trial led by a team based at the Oxford Cancer Research Centre will trial the experimental drug called LY2181308 with advanced non-small cell lung cancer patients who no longer respond to platinum chemotherapy - the standard initial treatment for this group.
